Kimball Hill’s Postwar Suburb
The land was once part of Plum Grove, where settlers dammed Salt Creek in the early 1840s. The small cemetery of the 1862 Salem Evangelical Church still sits at Kirchoff and Plum Grove roads. In the early 1950s, builder Kimball Hill bought land originally meant for a golf course, advertised a model home in the Chicago Tribune and named the development Rolling Meadows. The first residents moved in in 1953. About 700 homes had sold by 1955, the same year Rolling Meadows incorporated as a city. An industrial park opened on North Hicks Road in 1958, and Golf Road later filled with offices along the Golden Corridor.
Those 1950s houses are compact, and many have been expanded. Original laundry areas are often small, kitchens have been reworked within old footprints, and furnaces sit in tight utility rooms. Our technicians work in spaces like these every week.

High-Efficiency Furnaces in Older Utility Rooms
Many Rolling Meadows homes have replaced their original furnaces with high-efficiency models, often squeezed into the same small utility room. Those furnaces bring their own common problems: a clogged condensate trap or line that shuts the furnace down, a blocked intake or exhaust pipe, or a pressure switch that won’t close. Many no-heat calls in winter come down to one of these, and they’re usually a straightforward fix once diagnosed. Our technicians check the venting and condensate path along with the furnace itself.
Rolling Meadows grew fast once it started. Kimball Hill also founded the homeowners’ association, donated land for parks and helped fund the Clearbrook Center, which opened in 1955. Western Electric later ran a facility here that employed about 1,500 people. Many of the houses built for those early families are still lived in today and have been updated in stages.
