Wheaton has been DuPage County’s seat since a long rivalry with Naperville ended in its favor. Wheaton won an 1867 county-seat vote 1,686 to 1,635. When Naperville wouldn’t hand over the rest of the county records in 1868, a group of Civil War veterans from Wheaton carried out what became known as the “Midnight Raid” on the Naperville courthouse. The town incorporated as a village in 1859 and as a city in 1890. It expanded rapidly from the 1950s on, and growth has slowed since the early 1990s as the city has become largely landlocked.
That history shows in the housing. Prewar homes sit near downtown and the Union Pacific West line, mid-century houses spread out from there, and newer construction is mostly infill and teardown rebuilds.
