The first houses in Winnetka went up in 1836, when Erastus Patterson’s family opened a tavern on the Green Bay Trail post road. That route survives today as the Green Bay Trail bike path. The village incorporated in 1869. Between 1937 and 1942, the railroad tracks through town were lowered below street level after several people were struck at grade crossings. Winnetka’s park district, founded in 1904, is the fourth oldest in Illinois. Crow Island School, designed by Eliel and Eero Saarinen with Perkins, Wheeler & Will, was named a National Historic Landmark in 1990.
